Local band SuperGlu from Manningtree have been invited to play at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. A renowned showcase for new artists, SXSW has helped to launch the international careers of countless legendary acts (including The White Stripes, The Flaming Lips and Amy Winehouse). Anyone who’s SuperGlu live will know that if any hard-touring, tune-mongous DIY UK band deserves international recognition, that band is SuperGlu. However, this means that they have to raise a LOT of money in a very short space of time!
Event promoter Washing Machine have a special, hastily-arranged gig this coming Saturday, 25th February at The Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds to help suport the band make the trip to the world famous, potentially career-making American music festival SXSW in March.
SuperGlu have been a fantastic local success story; they regularly receive airplay on Radio One, Radio X and 6music, and last year headlined stages at Reading, Leeds and Latitude. However, like most indie/alternative acts they’re operating on a DIY basis and are largely self-funded, so Washing Machine are helping to raise money for their visas and air fares.
Four other local bands (JANET STREET SLAUGHTER, SIAH, THE CATCH and BLUE MEAN EYES), the technical crew and The Hunter Club have all offered their services free of charge.
